North American hardwood maple - the most abundant species of the continent - has been a hallmark of Community Playthings for over 50 years, and is still today our predominant raw material. We are FSC COC certified and are working with our suppliers to maximize our offering of FSC-certified product.

Are any hazardous chemicals created, used, or released during the manufacture of the product which must be reported under the State Right to Know Act (SARA), Section 313 via the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI)? (The absence of hazardous chemicals or air pollutants in manufacture is laudable. However the presence of such hazards is not a simple indicator of environmental impact. Which listed hazards are present, how they are handled, the magnitude of emissions, and the extent and effectiveness of efforts to minimize creation, use, and releases of such hazards, are all important in assessing environmental responsibility. While it can be problematic to try to compare the performance of different companies, a record of TRI releases by company found on the EPA website allows review of a single company over time. http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/tris/tris_query.html) |

We dramatically reduced - virtually eliminated actually - our release of VOCs by converting to a UV-cured waterborne finish. We pioneered in the US a Swedish product from manufacturer Becker-Acroma that is now in wide use in the furniture industry and recognized as one of the lowest-emitting wood finishes available.

Reusability is the highest form of recycling. Community Playthings is widely known for its long-lasting durability. Customers regularly call us and say, "We wish we could buy more, but your products never break! We've had your shelves for 20 (or 30) years, and they're just as sturdy as when we got them!" Our products can be found on eBay. Centers that need to close can easily find customers for 2nd-hand Community Playthings furnishings.

| Briefly describe the organizations environmental policies or programs and provide link to them on company website. | |||||||||
|
We are a small business with a strong sustainability ethos. For over two decades, we've had a strong commitment to lean manufacturing and waste reduction in both energy and materials. We turn off unused lights, cut the grass with push mowers, recycle, walk to work, divert waste for heat, and reduce/conserve as a matter of economy.
